Choosing a Karate School

Choosing the right Karate School for your child can be a difficult decision for many parents. Parents have as many reasons to send a child to a school as their are schools and programs here on Long Island. My best guess is that Nassau & Suffolk Counties have over 500 schools and programs that teach martial arts and self defense. Almost every town has boxing and wrestling programs. The most popular karate styles taught are taekwondo and shotokan..Jiujitsu, Kickboxing and MMA have gained a lot of attention because of UFC televised events. The softer arts of aikido and tai chi are popular with adults. Kempo, Kenpo and Goju Ryu teach excellent martial skills. Jeet Kune Do, the style that Bruce Lee founded and Krav Magna the Israeli Self Defense System have made huge contributions to the "Martial Arts".

How can a parent make the right choice for a martial art and a school for their child with all these choices?
You must ask yourself these questions and take the time and effort to follow up and get the "best" answers.
In our busy world the proximity of where a school is in relation to home is very important. you want to have a student attend and train several times per week. Consistency is vital to martial arts training. The cost of lessons is also a determining factor. Call a few schools in your neighborhood and ask Questions. Do they offer a FREE Trial Program, and ask directly how much lessons will cost after any trial program. Ask if your required to sign a contract . Many parents are hesitant to sign contracts for their children mostly because some children change their mind about "karate class" after finding hard work and commitment is required.

How many classes are offered weekly and at what times should be talked about . Don't make a final decision about a school until you have visited 2-3 schools to see which one "best" meets your criteria. The most important reason to make your "final decision about a school or program is the Instructor or Sensei. This person will have the greatest influence on a Karate Student.Everyone wishes they could have Chuck Norris as an instructor because of this high moral character or what we call Code of The Bushido. I know it's not an easy process but you have made the right choice to get your child self defense training.
